8 Indian bars and restaurants are part of this year’s 50 Best Discovery collection
Every year, 50 Best releases the best restaurants and bars in the world, in Asia and more. Making it to these definitive lists is an aspiration for establishments across the world, but out of the thousands of votes experts give, only an elite few restaurants and bars actually make it. 50 Best Discovery, launched in 2019, features a more diverse, unranked collection of local favourites. In previous years, Indian establishments like 6 Ballygunge Place in Kolkata, Bukhara and Dum Pukht in Delhi, Gunpowder in Goa and Trishna in Mumbai have become part of the collection, which is updated every year. This year, seven of the 601 new venues added to the collection are Indian restaurants and bars. Here’s what the expert voters say about them. 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Bomras, Anjuna, Goa
Smoked pork rice at Bomras “Difficult to spot if it weren’t for its mascot, a scarlet rickshaw, parked outside and lit by lanterns, this al fresco terrace has the atmosphere of a private members club. Of course, in an area as touristy as Anjuna international visitors are clocking on to it, but its clientele mostly consists of cultured Indians, including several famous authors and photographers. It’s the second iteration of the restaurant, which was previously located in Candolim, but regulars will recognise many of Burmese chef Bawmra Jap’s signatures on it: crackling pork and pomelo salad, Scotch eggs with Manipuri black rice and khow suey…” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Comorin, DLF Phase 5, Gurugram
Comorin, Delhi Photo: Instagram/@comorin.in “Buckle up for a journey throughout the flavours of the Indian subcontinent, from the fiery fish curries of the south to the comforting dhals of the north’s epic mountains…Tandoori red snapper sings alongside a refreshing mint salsa, while the malai kofta’s buttery tomato sauce is unbelievably comforting. There is also a whiskey-focused cocktail list confusingly termed ‘make it count’,” the list says. 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Tres, Lodhi Colony, New Delhi
Tres, Delhi Photo: Instagram/@tresdelhi “Chefs Julia Carmen Desa, Jatin Mallick and Jamsheed Bhote have co-created modern European menus consisting of the sort of dishes you might cook for yourself at home – if you were really, really accomplished and had an unlimited supply of quality ingredients. Pan-fried prawns and calamari served with a lime-chilli drizzle, smoky chicken wings sticky with lycee glaze and an open sandwich loaded with tenderloin, parmesan and marinated chillies are all great orders here. They also offer an extensive vegetarian menu at lunch, good to know for meat-free foodies.” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Copitas, Ganganagar, Bengaluru
Copitas Photo: Instagram/ @copitasbengaluru “Sat atop the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru, Copitas is the hottest cocktail spot in town for those in the know. With unparalleled views over the sprawling city’s skyline, the bar uses its surroundings as theatre, with its drink offering celebrating simplicity away from superfluity…Twists like the Crazy Rich Negroni – a coffee-infused version of the classic tipple, spruced up by South Asian ingredients – is Copitas’ tribute to its locality. Don’t skip out on its gin and tonics either, where the bar’s mixologists have crafted four variants on the timeless drink.” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 FTR - For The Record, Panjim, Goa
A cocktail at FTR Vinyl Bar Photo: Instagram/@ftr_vinylbar “Located in a Portuguese-era building in Panjim, owner Buland Shukla (who is also an audio engineer, jazz musician, and architect) opened the low-key bar with a top-of-the-line sound system, an extensive record collection and a tight but thoughtful list of seasonal cocktails that celebrate Indian ingredients. Feni, a liquor made from the fruit of the cashew tree that is typically made in Goa, is especially prominent on the menu, mixed with everything from beets and amaranth to persimmons and ginger.” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Home, Vasant Kunj, New Delhi
Home, New Delhi Photo: Instagram/@home_delhi “New Delhi's Home bar is a destination where travellers from around the world will feel welcome, as long as they can get an invite. The sprawling members-only club plays with that exclusive but comfortable dynamic throughout the design and drinks offerings, focusing on an understated luxury with an international feel…Live music, regular events that cater to a wide range of tastes and a cuisine scheme that travels from India to Japan and Europe round out the experience, making Home so much more than just a place for good cocktails.” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 Lair, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi
Lair Delhi “The cocktail programme – available from the first floor, the second level is a dining room featuring pan-Asian cuisine – caters to a wide variety of tastes, from simple and approachable drinks on the level one section of the menu to high-end options on the level three side made with ingredients from around the globe. Eccentric drink presentations match the drama of the atmosphere; the two colliding to create a unique and memorable experience.” 🍴🍕🍔🍷 The Living Room at Masque, Mahalaxmi, Mumbai
The Living Room at Masque “The environment feels true to its name, with big cosy armchairs and couches, house plants, well-worn books and a home-sized bar. The homey space fits only a few parties and features a limited menu of cocktails with local ingredients and progressive techniques. The signature drink, the Gamble, is made with pisco, mezcal, celery leaf, pink guava, ginger and sea buckthorn, which are blended and flash-frozen with liquid nitrogen, then filtered and served as a tall, crystal-clear cooler.” Cre: cntraveller
