When you think of street food in Lucknow, what comes to mind? Aside from the delicious servings of rolls and biryanis, there’s a world of food choices to explore.
We are talking today about the iconic matar chaat, a staple street snack in Lucknow. Remember how when school would be over, and we would rush out eager to hang out with our friends before going home?
Well, one of the staples of our childhood was the matar chaat bhaiya, serving little green pockets of pure deliciousness. And even today, if you travel along the streets of Old Lucknow, you’re bound to come across a smiling face inviting you to try out their matar chaat.
The chaat is a delicious mix of boiled matar or dried white peas mixed with special spices and masala, freshly chopped onions, and herbs. The chaat is then topped off with lemon juice and freshly crushed crisped papdi. Served in a rolled cone or platter made from leaves, it’s the perfect snack for when you’re on the go.
One of the best spots to enjoy this snack is just outside Gadbad Jhala in Aminabad. In fact, it’s almost customary for shoppers to stop for a leaf of matar chaat as they shop from one of the city’s oldest markets.
Do you remember enjoying matar chaat?
