Travel Japan to visit the pagoda containing thousands of Daruma dolls
Katsuo Pagoda (Osaka, Japan) is the "accommodation" of thousands of Daruma dolls when from inside the pagoda to the corridor, or the mountain slope, the traditional red doll appears.
If you go to Osaka in spring, you should not ignore the attractive destination that is the peaceful Katsuo pagoda. The pagoda is open daily. From Monday to Friday, the pagoda opens at 8:00 and closes at 17:00. On Saturday the pagoda closes at 17:30. On Sunday the pagoda opens to welcome guests for longer, closes at 18:00. The pagoda entrance ticket is 400 yen (85.000-90,000 VND).
Katsuo Pagoda has a long history. In the 8th century, the two brothers from the power royal family Fujikawa erected a small tent on the campus of the current temple. By the end of the 8th century, it became an official temple when the son of Emperor Konin (Emperor 49 of Japan) came here to become a Buddhist monk and led a religious life. At that time, the pagoda was called Miroku-ji.
After Emperor Seiwa (the 56 Emperor of Japan) was seriously ill, the bonzes in the pagoda have prayed from the morning to the afternoon so that he could recover, and the miracle actually happened. Since then, the pagoda was renamed Katsuo-ji, which means Thang Vuong Tu; however, then again changed into Thang Vi Tu (but in Japanese transcription still Katsuo-ji).
The sanctity of the temple over the centuries remains intact, the people often come here to pray for good chances in love, pray for career, pray for luck in business... because they have faith from the fact that Emperor won the illness in the old days after being prayed by the bronzes in the temple.
The special thing about this temple is that many different big and small Daruma dolls appear inside the temple, corridor, or mountain slope. Daruma dolls are associated with Japanese culture. The statue of Daruma appears everywhere in the land of Phu Tang.
The Daruma doll was adapted from the image of the Bodhidharma ( Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma), who created the Zen school. According to the ancient classic reference, the Zen Teaching of Bodhidharma brought in the Zen school from India to preach across Asia. He is considered to be the ancestor of the Shaolin Monastery in China.
To commemorate the Bodhidharma, the Japanese created the Daruma statue. This type of doll is usually made of wood, round shape, red paint, without arms and legs, has a black large mustache and no eyes. When buying Daruma, Japanese people will wish one thing and draw an eye. When the wishes come true, they will draw on the other eye.
There is one principle to draw the eyes of Daruma that the artist must draw the left eye first and concentrate on thinking of his wish while drawing. The eye on the right must be perfected later.
Katsuo Pagoda is not only a sacred place of prayer but also a unique tourist attraction, attracts foreign visitors to visit, check-in with thousands of colorful red dolls of Daruma around the temple.
The pagoda is built on a high mountain, so it is quite difficult for the tourists to move to this place. From Kita-Senri station, Seri-Chuo (Osaka), take bus No. 29 to get to the pagoda, the bus stops days right in front of the pagoda gate. Travel time is approximately 45 minutes. However, the number of buses is quite a few, the bus frequency is 2 hours/trip for weekdays and 1 hour/trip for weekends. Buses usually finish at 17:00-17:30 depending on the day.
