THE MAGICAL MIRROR HOUSE IN SWITZERLAND
The house is like a work of art reflecting the changes in nature through the seasons in the Swiss Alps.
************************************************** **************
The house is referred to as Mirage Gstaad and was created by Doug Aitken, an American artist. The ranch-style houses in upstate California in the 1920s and 1930s served as the design inspiration for the Mirage Gstaad. The house is part of the Elevation 1049 series of performances run by the Luma Foundation, Switzerland.
************************************************** **************
In the summer, a lovely sight is created when the roof reflects the blue sky and the walls blend with the bright flower meadow.
************************************************** **************
Icebergs hang from the roof, and flakes of snow fall through the windows in winter, making the house seem invisible in the white snow.
************************************************** **************
Visitors can go inside to visit the Mirage Gstaad. Mirrored ceilings, windows, and walls reflect the outdoors when viewed from the inside, giving visitors a surreal feeling. Both an old bank in Detroit, Michigan, and many variations of the house are situated in Palm Springs, California, in the United States.
************************************************** **************
According to Dezeen, Doug Aitken said that during the construction, the architectural firm worked with Vogelwarte Sempach (Swiss Association for the Protection of Birds) to find a way to protect the migratory birds around here. The front of the house has additional black horizontal lines installed 3 cm apart, making the house visible from a distance.
************************************************** **************
“I saw Mirage as a human-scale lens that the viewer would enter into, and in the process, they would become the work," said Aitken.
"I am very interested in artworks that change continuously," continued the artist. "Artworks that change with the landscape."
************************************************** **************
Mirage Gstaad appears to be a part of nature from some perspectives. Visitors find it difficult to tell where the mirror's reflection is when they are fully engaged in the environment.
************************************************** **************
The surface of the house reflects variations in light and weather from dawn to dusk. The light from inside shines through the side windows at night.
Since there is no parking nearby, you will need to hire a place to stay in Gstaad, Switzerland, and then take the train to Gruben or Schönried station. Visitors will view the mansion towering over the magnificent Alps after following a guided route on the map app.
