Hunting for clouds at Y Ty - Lao Than at the beginning of the year
Lao Than is not at the top of difficulty or height, but definitely at the top of beautiful cloud hunting spots. At 2,860m high, Lao Than is known as the roof of Y Ty (Lao Cai), the way to check in at Lao Than peak is not too arduous but requires endurance and perseverance. If you want to be immersed in the sea of clouds, you should trek from October to March. Duration: 3 nights & 2 days
Equipment to prepare: necessary climbing items include specialized shoes, raincoats, gloves, climbing clothes, snacks, headlamps, etc. In addition, when going in the cold season, it is necessary to bring more warm clothes, thermal shirts, scarves, and sleeping bags.
🍀 Day 1: Hanoi - Sapa - Y Ty • My Dinh bus station (Hanoi) - Sapa bus station (Lao Cai): There are quite a few garages, so you can choose whichever reputable bus or the one you are familiar with. My team took the sleeper bus of Ha Son Hai Van, commuting from 11 pm to 4 am to Sapa. Ticket price ranges from VND 230k to VND 280k depending on the time you book.
• In Sapa, our team rented a homestay of Mr. Son to store some things, take a shower, rest, have breakfast and rent motorbikes to go to Y Ty. Motorbike rental here costs VND 100k/motorbike/day. • The distance from Sapa to Y Ty is about 80km, and it takes about 4 hours to move in the direction of Sapa - Muong Hum - Y Ty. There are small, winding roads, so people have to ride slowly and carefully.
• At Y Ty, I rented a homestay from Mr. Ho. He is a homeowner in Y Ty and a porter cum owner of a shack in Lao Than. There is full service for me to book. If you go on holiday, you should contact him soon. After eating and resting, we spent the afternoon exploring Y Ty. Because we didn't have much time, we went to 2 places: Ngai Thau and Choan Then (Y Ty Park). Don't forget to catch the sunset and take pictures with 2 happy trees (Old Duya trees) in Choan Then. In the evening, we took a rest, ate at the homestay of Mr. Ho and prepared for the trek tomorrow.
🍀 Day 2: Y Ty - Lao ThanAt 7:00 am, we were on the way to the climbing site. Because of riding motorbikes, you can reach the nearest trek site. At about 8 am the whole team started trekking at Lao Than.
The first part of the road is a primeval forest that is quite easy to move. It takes about 3-4 hours to go all the way to the lunch point. The food has been prepared by the porter. We had 1 hour of eating and resting. At 1 pm, we moved to the shack for resting at night. The afternoon trek includes mainly small trails that are not entangled with trees, so it is easy to observe the clouds and surrounding scenery. The road has many trails, so everyone should pay close attention to each other to avoid getting lost.
At 4 pm, we were at the shack to take pictures of the sunset, eat something, and rest. In the evening, the shack in the starry sky is suitable for those who like to take pictures of the moon and stars.
🍀 Day 3: Check-in at the top of Lao Than - Y Ty - Sapa At 4:30 a.m., we woke up, did personal hygiene, and had a light meal, started going to the top to catch the dawn at 5 a.m. It's not too far from the shack and quite easy to go. It only takes about 1h-1h30' to get there. The dawn of Lao Than is very very beautiful when the sun comes out. The first rays of sunlight shine on the ground, everything becomes clearer, the surrounding landscape and sky are dyed bright pink, and the sea of white clouds is undulating, which is really like a fairyland. Everyone took advantage of taking pictures to check in at 8 o'clock and went back to the shack to get things down the mountain to the motorbike parking place. It took about 3-4 hours to move from the top to the foot of the mountain, then the whole team rode motorbikes back to Sapa.
On the way back, we took the time to catch the sunset on O Quy Ho pass - One of the longest, most dangerous, and majestic passes in the North.
Around 6 pm, the whole team returned to Mr. Son's homestay, took a shower and rested. You can go to the town to take a bath with medicinal herbs, sauna, relax massage if you want and then make a salmon or sturgeon hot pot or ask Mr. Son for helps with cooking. After eating, strolling around Sapa to buy some things, then at 10 pm, we presented at the bus station, and got on the bus back to Hanoi at 11 pm. At 4 am, the whole team is present in Hanoi to end the New Year holiday. --- 📸 Review of Anh tho anh (A photographer) #$gnal$#
