Shirakawa-go – a beautiful ancient village stepping out of a Japanese fairy tale
Shirakawa-go in Japanese means village of white rivers. Shirakawa-go seems to stand far away from contemporary life, where time seems to stop, the scenery is nostalgic and peaceful, and the smell of the air is strangely clear.
@mikityyy1223 Located in the heart of the Shogawa valley, Shirakawa-go's characteristic pitched-roof houses are nestled among the remote mountains. Built in the Gassho-zukuri (praying hand) style, the roofs are designed to withstand heavy snowfall. In winter, the village is illuminated by flickering lights, creating a beautiful scene like a miniature fairy world. Shirakawa-go Village is located at the foot of Mount Haku-san, Gifu Prefecture, Central Japan. A special feature of this village is the gasshō-zukuri style wooden houses with sloping roofs made of thatched grass, which look like praying hands.

@hrkzphoto In particular, the sloping roof of the house in Shirakawa-go is to cope with the snow because there's a lot of snow in the winter. Only the thatched roofs of these houses are up to 50cm thick to provide resistance to snow and cold weather. From a distance, the hidden roofs amid the mountainous scenery look beautiful like something out of a fairy tale. One of the special things about Shirakawa-go is the old houses (114 houses), of which the oldest is 400 years old. The houses here have a sloping thatched-roof architecture, called Gassho zukuri, like a folded hand praying to protect the villagers from blizzards. These thatched roofs are usually 50cm thick, not nailed to fix but tied with ropes. The body of the house is made of black ebony wood. In the middle of the house will be a fire like in the setting of old Japanese movies, or Doraemon stories. People often hang an aluminum kettle or a dried fish grilled on the fire.

@luungocdiep304 With more than 100 houses, including more than 20 old wooden houses hundreds of years old that are preserved almost intact, the village has been recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1995. It is known that the village is the place of painting Fujiko Fujio conceived and released the classic manga Doraemon. The main tourist attraction in the old village of Shirakawa-go is Ogimachi, the largest house in the old village. Built about 300 years ago, the houses are repaired every year to keep their appearance.

@kaineee The weather in Shirakawa-go has 4 distinct seasons, so no matter what time you come here, you can feel its fairy-like beauty. In the spring and summer, the scenery here is wonderful with the green of the trees. In the autumn, the space is dreamy when the trees begin to change color. However, the most beautiful time of Shirakawa-go is winter, when heavy snow falls to cover the village roads and of course the old roofs here. From late December to mid-March, heavy snow covers Shirakawa-go in snow and this is the time when this ancient village is also at its most beautiful. It is known that at this time, the amount of snow here is often about 2 to 3m thick, creating an impressive white scene.

@kyoko1903 On a winter's night, Shirakawa-go is strangely beautiful with its houses full of light. In January-February, Shirakawa-go will illuminate the night sky for 7 days respectively, the lights everywhere and snow-covered roofs create a magical look that you can hardly find anywhere in Japan. In spring, Shirakawa-go shines, the green of the trees and the yellow of the rice fields blend together. The roofs of Shirakawa-go are lined with thatched grass about 50cm thick, like praying hands, both showing a religious feature and sheltering the villagers from the fury of nature and blizzards. The houses are built in the north or south direction to avoid the wind, keeping them warm in winter and cool in summer.
@meenmeen_0 Shirakawa-go was recognized by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage site in 1995, and Japan put this village on the list of heritage in need of special protection. Every year, about 2 million tourists come here, but with the protection of the government, Shirakawa-go has not been over-exploited for tourism, the life of the village and the people here remain the same as before. Therefore, if you have the opportunity, try paying Shirakawa-go at least one visit for the opportunity of experiencing the unique architecture of this ancient village, festivals, culture, cuisine, and life here. - By Leisure-travel #$gnal$#
