🌈 An Annual LGBT Pride Celebration
🌈 Every year, the LGBT community celebrates in a variety of ways during the month of June. Across the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognising the influence LGBT people have had around the world. Why does Pride Month take place in June? It all started on June 28, 1969, when police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York. Though the police claimed the bar was operating with an invalid liquor license, the raid was all about physically assaulting and detaining LGBTQ people in one of the few locations they felt secure.
🌈 Similar raids on gay-friendly businesses had been going on for decades, but Stonewall was one of the first occasions patrons fought back. A diverse gathering of lesbians, gay men, and transgender women, many of whom were people of color, battled with the police, flung bottles, and refused to be intimidated.
🌈 Stonewall, spurred by the frustration of being targeted and harassed, worked where polite and civil protests had failed. The first Pride march took place in 1970, a year later, to commemorate β€” loudly and without a dress code β€” those who fought for their rights.
🌈 Thanks to those Stonewall patrons and generations of LGBTQ people who fought for the rights of the community, the world is now an easier place to live for LGBTQ people than it was 10, 15, or 20 years ago.
🌈 Apart from being a month-long celebration, Pride Month is also an occasion to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current community concerns. Parades are a key component of Pride month, as are many street parties, community activities, poetry readings, public speaking, street festivals, and educational sessions, all of which are well publicized and attended by millions of people.
🌈 The New York Pride Parade is one of the largest and most well known parades to take place, with an estimated 500,000 people participating in it by the time it had reached its 25th anniversary.
🌈 Pride Month is important because it symbolizes the beginning of huge change within the LGBT+ community, as well as the broader social implications. Although attitudes and unfairness persist still remain, we have gone a long way since the 1969 riots, and by continuing in this long-standing tradition, we can continue to raise awareness, alter societal attitudes, and encourage inclusiveness. #Pride2022
