Akureyri is the largest Icelandic settlement outside of Reykjavik, and a fantastic place to take a break from nature tours and soak up some culture. It boasts an abundance of museums, galleries, boutiques, restaurants and bars, as well as some beautiful architectural structures and gardens. The new fissure, first spotted by a sightseeing helicopter, was about 500 metres long and about a kilometre from the original eruption site in the Geldinga Valley. The Icelandic Department of Emergency Management announced an immediate evacuation of the area. Is it real? 🥰 A magnificent and massive canyon, about 100 meters deep and about two kilometres long. The canyon has sheer walls, and is somewhat serpentine and narrow. The bedrock is mostly palagonite from cold periods of the Ice Age and is thought to be about two million years old.
